I am a fully qualified yoga teacher with FrYog as well as a pregnancy and postnatal Yoga teacher  and tutor holding the Birthlight teaching diploma – Birthlight is a charity dedicated to enhancing the experience of pregnancy, birthing and motherhood through Yoga.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the yoga:

When can I start the regular Yoga sessions? From about 14/15 weeks of pregnancy, after the symptoms of early pregnancy such as excessive tiredness have eased. In your first trimester you are welcome to attend one of the free breathe and relax sessions.

Do I need to have practiced Yoga before? No – the sessions are all very gentle and assume that you are a beginner.

What will the sessions involve? We often start with a breathing practice to help you calm and centre yourself, progressing to a range of gentle movements in a variety of positions, from sitting to kneeling, on all fours to standing. These movements focus on helping the body to both tone as well as to release as the pregnancy progresses, giving you time to focus on your pregnancy and to prepare for labour. Each session ends with a deep relaxation.

Can I do the sessions if I have pelvic girdle pain? Absolutely, as many of the movements focus on pelvic stability and others can be adapted, but please let me know if this is the case!

What are the benefits of doing Yoga during pregnancy? Many of us lead busy lives so the Yoga gives you a time to focus on your and your baby, encouraging you to enjoy your pregnancy as well as to prepare for motherhood. Yoga brings feelings of well-being and calm in the midst of what can be a daunting experience. You will feel better prepared for labour and birthing; Yoga can help you to tune into your intuition so that you are mentally and physically better able to cope with this challenging time. Additionally, you get to meet other pregnant women as well as to have some fun and laughter!
