Feeling cared for, safe and supported during pregnancy and birth is essential. A birth doula is a compassionate woman, trained and knowledgeable in childbirth, who offers emotional and practical support before, during and just after the birth. A doula will work with you and your partner during the weeks before your baby’s birth to ensure that you both feel prepared and ready for the changes ahead. A doula is not a medical professional and does not perform clinical tasks, diagnose medical conditions or give medical opinions. She will not interfere with medical decisions and advice. She is there to offer unbiased, evidence based information, to support the woman in the decisions she makes and to offer continuous care to both mother and her partner from early labour until after the birth. It is important you feel that your birth experience and decisions remain within your control. Healthcare professionals, midwives and doctors, are there to support and guide you in order to keep you and your baby safe during childbirth. Some couples appreciate extra support from someone they know, as labour establishes and advances. Careful preparation can help you start labour in a positive and confident way. As a doula I will protect your birthing environment and stay with you throughout your labour. I will ensure that whether you are at home or in hospital the experience will be as positive and fulfilling as possible. Research has shown that the presence of a doula can positively influence labour in many ways: • 50% reduction in C- section rate • 25% shorter labour • 60% reduction in epidural requests • 40% reduction in oxytocin use • 30% reduction in analgesia (pain relief) use • 40% reduction in forceps delivery • Information was obtained from Mothering the Mother: How a Doula Can HelpYou Have a Shorter Easier and Healthier Birth, Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus I have completed Doula training with Nurturing Birth and am a registered nurse.
