Fertility Pregnancy Birth

Fertility

More and more women are finding it difficult to conceive and, whilst for some there may be a physical explanation, for others it is simply unexplained. The repeated cycle of disappointment, loss and sadness is emotionally and physically draining and often leads to feelings of helplessness in both partners.

Using a combination of acupuncture and nutrition is an empowering way to maximise your chances of conception and maximise pre-conceptual health.

I have worked in this area for 9 years, helping many to conceive naturally or working with couples through treatments such as IUI, IVF, ICSI. For those 9 years, I have been the acupuncture practitioner at Midlands Fertility Services, so have an in-depth knowledge of the treatment protocols and the physical and emotional impact of treatment.

Pregnancy

For many this is a happy and exciting time but it can also lead to anxieties, especially if you have had difficulties in conceiving or previous miscarriages. Having gentle acupuncture is a safe and effective way of maintaining health for mother and baby. Treatment often helps relieve nausea, sickness, aches and pains and increases vitality. Later, if your baby is in the breech position, treatment with moxa, a warming herb, will often encourage your baby to turn. It can be helpful as a couple to learn some acupressure points prior to labour. And weekly treatment from 36 weeks helps in a smooth transition into labour and birth.

Birth and after

The changes that occur during and immediately after birth are complex. Acupuncture will help to restore balance after birth whilst attending to diet will maximise health for both the new mother and her baby.

Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine which works on the natural rhythms and cycles of the body. Very fine needles are inserted into specific points just under the skin to bring about changes in the body's functioning. Women often find that their menstrual cycle regularises. Men have discovered that their sperm health has improved.

People often come for help with fertility and find that other aspects of their health have improved too - for example, asthma, migraines, digestive problems or back pain. Most will find they have an improved sense of wellbeing, feel more relaxed, maybe sleep better. But treatment is far more than physical - it will support you emotionally and provide a safe place to share feelings it may be difficult to share elsewhere.

Nutrition is key to ensuring the best environment in which to conceive and nurture a baby. There is no one diet appropriate for everyone - it is essential that foods and supplements are tailored to the individual. We can work together on creating a non-challenging diet specific to your needs, on cleansing and re-hydrating your body and on nurturing your health with food, supplements (if necessary) and naturopathic techniques.

I was inspired to change my career to practice acupuncture after experiencing the impact of treatment on my own health. I worked previously in social work, counselling and adoption.

I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council and adhere to its codes of practice and ethics. More details about treatment can be found on its website.
