WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a mind body exercise technique originally devised by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. Pilates focuses on the deep postural muscles promoting core stability. Good core stability is important for maintaining good posture. Pilates works to rebalance the body: strengthening the weak muscles and relaxing and lengthening the tight muscles.
PILATES IN PREGNANCY
Pilates is a great way to maintain your strength and suppleness during pregnancy. You can also use it as a way of stepping down the intensity of your usual exercise program. Pilates works on the muscles that support the back and pelvis helping to control pregnancy related back pain.
POSTNATAL PILATES
Postnatal Pilates is a great way to get back into exercise after having a baby. You can start at 6 weeks (12 weeks if you have had a caesarean). You start gently and build up your level of exercise within the class as you become able. The class focuses particularly on the pelvic floor, deep abdominals and gluteal muscles which are often weakened by pregnancy and birth. This makes it a particularly suitable class for people suffering with back and pelvic pain, abdominal diastasis (dividsion) and pelvic floor weakness. Strengthening the deep abdominals muscles will also help to draw the tummy flat. The class also incorporates general stretches and strengthening to work the whole body.
Babies are welcome!
ONE TO ONE PILATES
One to one Pilates involves assessment of your needs and your movement and muscle control so that a program can be specifically designed to meet your requirements. You will learn correct alignment and how to isolate the core muscles effectively. A one to one will give you a greater understanding of your body and how it works so that you will enjoy the benefits from your Pilates more quickly. One to one is particularly beneficial if you suffer from spine or joint problems. A one to one is also a great way to introduce yourself to Pilates before joining a class.
PHYSIOTHERAPY
Julia Edwards also offers physiotherapy treatment. Phsyiotherapy can treat pregnancy related back and pelvic pain and distasis recti (division of the abdominals postnatally).
