Osteopathy

The treatment of muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints, to help the body’s natural healing ability.
It involves gentle, manual techniques - easing pain, reducing swelling and improving mobility.

Cranial Osteopathy

A subtle type of osteopathic treatment, using gentle manipulative techniques to release stresses within the body and head. This techniques uses the body’s ‘Involuntary Motion’: a rhythmical shape change that is present throughout all body tissues.

Osteopathy for Mothers
A mother has to adapt to carrying 20lbs of baby, water and placenta during the pregnancy and this can put a great physical strain on the body. Osteopathic treatment can help during the pregnancy in several ways

  • Helping the body cope with the increasing weight of the baby and fluid.
  • Preparing her for the demands of labour.
  • Assisting the mother’s recovery after the pregnancy and delivery.
  • Helping reduce strain on the spine and pelvis, particularly during the first few weeks after the baby is born, due to the unaccustomed lifting and carrying a new baby.
  • The treatment may consist of Osteopathic and Cranial Osteopathic treatment.

Cranial Osteopathy for Infants and Children
During birth, a babies head is subject to a variety of forces, as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the resistance of the birth canal and bony pelvis. Normally the baby’s head can accommodate these stresses, by allowing the soft bones of the skull to overlap (moulding). Suckling, crying and yawning all help to affect the pressure in the skull and naturally restore the cranial shape (unmoulding). If this unmoulding process is incomplete, a baby may appear to have problems sleeping, feeding or holding down food, and may be fractious and irritable.
